Depression and Anxiety

Anxiety is a common mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by persistent feelings of worry, fear, and apprehension, which can interfere with daily activities and quality of life. Mental Health Occupational Therapists play an important role in the treatment of anxiety, using an holistic and client-centered approach. The focus is on helping individuals identify and understand their triggers, develop coping strategies and stress management techniques to minimise symptoms. Treatment plans may include a range of interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, lifestyle modifications and gradual exposure. Sometimes trauma reducing techniques help where the anxiety has arisen from a past negative experience. I work to support peoples' sense of mastery over their anxiety, alongside listening to the anxiety to take note of any important messages it may have for the individual to improve their overall well-being.

Depression is a common mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities that once brought pleasure. Sometimes depression arises in response to an event which needs to be grieved or processed. Sometimes the depression is hiding a wisdom that needs hearing.

I also support people to identify and understand their triggers, develop coping strategies and motivational techniques. It can be useful to help someone understand the different treatments available as often the most powerful treatment is a combination of medication, psychological and behavioral approaches plus exercise. Treatment plans may include a range of interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, relaxation techniques and lifestyle modifications. Activity scheduling is helpful to ensure everyday includes something the person enjoys and something they want to achieve to develop self esteem and a sense of accomplishment. Gradually we would aim to build rewarding connections with others, a support network and build in the activities you want to be able to do, so yours feels like a life worth living.
